Mathews High School’s Harry M. Ward Auditorium will come alive the weekends of April 18-19 and 25-27 with the energy of 60 youth and adults from the Middle Peninsula and beyond as they recount in song and dance the story of the newsboy strike of 1899 in The Court House Players’ production of Disney’s “Newsies.”
Set in turn-of-the-century New York City, Newsies is the tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right.
An ambitious young reporter, Katherine Plumber, working hard to make a name for herself as a legitimate journalist in a time when women aren’t taken seriously, attempts to capture the voice of a rising new generation in her coverage of the strike.
