CHARLOTTE VIRGINIA WINSTEAD

Charlotte Virginia Winstead left this world from Gloucester, Virginia, rejoicing to be with the Lord, on Sunday, March 16, 2025, after 97 years of being a pillar of strength and care for those around her. She was bound by her faith in Jesus and love of her family. Even as her mind failed towards the end of her life, she could quote John 3:16 from memory. Notwithstanding substantial loss and obstacles throughout her life, Charlotte remained joyful.

Born at home on July 23, 1927 on Amherst Street in Norfolk, the eldest of six Holton children, Charlotte graduated from Norview High School and pursued a career as an executive assistant in various fields, most notably Virginia Transit, Amtrak, Universal Atlas Cement, Norfolk Southern, and Medical Center Norfolk. A survivor of breast cancer and pioneering retinal surgery, Charlotte regularly volunteered, counseling patients who were facing uncertain outcomes. She spent her life caring for others.

Charlotte is lovingly remembered by son, James E. Blick of Richmond (Nedra); grandchildren, David Kelly of Front Royal, Ginny Jones of Boston (Ronnie), McKenzie Blick of Walkerton; great-granddaughter, Caroline Jones; sister, Brenda Holton Woodard of Suffolk; sister-in-law, Charlotte Holton Harris of Norfolk; son-in-law, Donald Smith of Gloucester; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bernard F. Blick (1976); second husband, Clyde J. Winstead Jr. (2000); daughters, Susan Blick Kelly (2012) and Deborah Blick Smith (2025); parents, Melvery (1967) and Virginia (1992) Holton; siblings, Margaret Mae (1929), William “Buddy” (1995), Melva Holton Deans (2022), and Herbert (2005).

A Celebration of Life will be held at Norview Baptist Church, 1127 Norview Avenue, Norfolk, Va., on April 25 at 1 p.m. Condolences may be conveyed at www.andrewsfuneralservices.com. Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, is in charge of arrangements.
