CHARLES ‘DICK’ ALLEN

Charles “Dick” Allen passed away on September 30, 2024, Eleanor’s birthday, at the age of 90 in Hayes, Va.
Dick proudly served in the United States Navy, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer. His Naval service influenced his post-military career where he taught aviation maintenance to both Air Force and Army personnel. Dick held a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Mainten

In “retirement,” Dick was a skilled builder, a trade where he applied his attention to detail and his strong work ethic. His hobbies included woodworking, running, tennis, and pickleball, endeavors that showcased his love for physical activity.
Dick was a man described by those who knew him as hardworking, honest, and reliable, a testament to his character both at home and in his professional life. He was a beloved husband to Jean Allen and a father to Rick Allen (Genia) and Charry Hudgins (Robert). He also leaves behind Jean’s much-loved children, Kim Shiflett (Kenny) and Todd Smith (Tracie). His family also included his cherished grandchildren, Auburn DeBolt (Brent), Brittany Holloway (Eddie), Charlie Allen (Caroline), Corey Kellum (Mark), and Leah Sutton (Kevin), and great-grandsons, Caleb DeBolt, Brody Sutton and Austin Sutton. Dick was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor Allen, to whom he was married for 56 years, and by his second wife, Joan Allen. The family is especially grateful for the care Dick received from Dr. Haggerty and all in his office, Riverside Walter Reed Hospice, and to Natalina Vicente.

A service to honor Dick’s life will be held at Bellamy United Methodist Church in Gloucester on October 23 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Abingdon Rescue Squad, or the Gloucester Mathews Care Clinic.
