In addition, he is survived by two brothers, Harry Barker of Gloucester, and Billy Geouge of Lanexa, Virginia, as well as a sister, Shirley Briggs of Burnsville, North Carolina.
Charlie was born in Yancy County, North Carolina, and moved to Achilles, Virginia, at a very young age. He held various roles at CSX Rail Services for all 43 years he was employed. Before he retired and over the course of his career at CSX, he worked as both a railroad track foreman and safety inspector.
Charlie and his wife had been members of Dandy Baptist Church for many years where he formerly served as a church deacon and was on the Board of Trustees.
Charlie enjoyed the outdoors through various activities. In particular, he was an avid hunter and former member of the Banbury Rod and Gun Club in Charles City, Virginia. He also loved gardening and grilling in his backyard and woodworking. He was a former football player at Gloucester High School where he received an All State Honorable Mention and was named to the Daily Press All Peninsula Team in 1968. He loved watching football on Saturdays and Sundays, and was honored when his oldest grandson, Ryan, chose to wear his old #62 jersey number for York High School. Charlie was a diehard fan of the Washington Redskins despite his strong aversion to team ownership for the past 23 years.
Charlie will be honored at a memorial service at Hope of Glory Christian Church in Dandy, Virginia, on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 11 a.m. Casual attire is acceptable. Donations may be made in honor of Charlie to the American Cancer Society. Those who wish to send flowers may send them to the Amory Funeral Home, 410 Grafton Drive, Yorktown, Virginia 23692.
