CHARLENE N. CARTER

Charlene N. Carter entered the Golden Gates on Friday, November 1, 2024, to be with her Heavenly Father.

Charlene was born on January 15, 1943 to the late Charles and Catherine Farrar Nixon in Bridgeport, Conn. Charlene received her education in the Bridgeport school system before attending St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C., where she graduated and became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She later obtained a Master’s degree from the University of Bridgeport and a certificate of Advanced Study from Fairfield University. Charlene taught for four years at Madison School in Bridgeport, before applying for and being accepted as a teacher aide liaison for Developmental Programs, a role she held for two years in the central office. She later advanced to become the principal at Newfield School Wilbur Cross and spent her final 17 years at Black Rock School, ultimately retiring after 36 years in the field of education.

She was married to the love of her life, James L. Carter. Their marriage lasted for 38 years until his passing on October 28, 2012. After relocating to Mathews, Va., in 2001, she became a dedicated and loyal member of Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Cobbs Creek, Va.

Throughout her life, Charlene was involved in various organizations, including the New Haven Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Fairfield County Chapter of Links, Les Treize Business and Professional Women’s Organization, the Bridgeport Boys and Girls Choir, and the Bridgeport Fairfield Teachers Supervisory Board.

She is survived by two stepdaughters, Sharon C. Ferguson of Bridgeport, and Valerie C. DeBerry of Charlotte, N.C., along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, and close friend, Venita Fields.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 12 p.m. at Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Cobbs Creek. The family will gather at the church at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Mathews Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 610, Urbanna, Va. 23175.
