CECIL BEST CRUMPLER

Cecil Best Crumpler, 83, of Gloucester, passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, surrounded by her family at home. Born on January 4, 1941 in Brunswick, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late William Henry Best and Ruby McPherson Best. Cecil was a longtime member of Petsworth Baptist Church, playing the piano and organ from approximately 1979 until 2008, and Beulah Baptist Church in Ware Neck, playing for around eight years. She was an active gardener who enjoyed growing vegetables, flowers, and shrubs while designing, landscaping, and maintaining the yard around her home. She often shared the bounty of her garden with family, neighbors, and friends. She also loved to share various potted flowers and plant cuttings from the many varieties of flowers she grew. In addition to gardening, she was known for her cooking and baking skills, from her famous Christmas-time Danish pastries to the best carrot cake ever made, and strawberry freezer jam. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Jake and Joe Best, and four sisters, Nizy Bell Best, Jessie Best, Nezi Mae Pope, and Estelle Best Martin. Cecil is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Bobby Glenn Crumpler; four children, Glenna Montgomery Alexander of Hertford, N.C., Mark Crumpler of Siler City, N.C.; Becky Brown and husband Randy of Yorktown, Va., and Beverly Cole and husband David of Evington, Va.; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren (with two on the way), one great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Louise Crumpler Goddard and husband Max, and countless additional family and friends. The family received friends on Saturday, September 28, 2024, from 1:30-2:15 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, followed by a chapel service at 2:30, conducted by the Rev. Tom Cohick.
