Carroll “Nelson” Smith, 73, of Bon Air, Va., born and raised in Mathews County, Va., to the late Morris and Pearl Smith, passed away on April 10, 2023. He retired from Philip Morris and worked as a licensed real estate agent. He joined the U.S. Army and volunteered for 15 months in Vietnam. He loved working, crabbing, fishing, working, gardening, cooking, traveling, playing with his grandchildren, and working. He was a loving husband, dad and granddad. He loved watching his children and grandchildren growing and exploring life. He loved spending time at his in-laws’ cottage in Deltaville and his parents’ home in Mathews County, eating crabs and drinking an ice- cold beer. Nelson lived by the song “My Way” by Frank Sinatra and he lived like the Tasmanian Devil. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Shawn Cannella (Joe); son, Robert Smith (Jenny); six grandchildren, Anna, Manny, Rosalind, Amanda, Lucy and Jack; numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to send a special “Thank You” to the chemo nurses at McGuire VA Hospital, hospice care and Home Helpers. A gathering of family and friends was held from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Bliley’s-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road, where a funeral ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion #83, Mathews County, P.O.
