CARL DOUGLAS THOMAS

Carl Douglas Thomas, 88, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 29, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Norma, and daughters, Cindy Wright (Scott) and Carla Hurlbert (Richard). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ella and Jack Hurlbert.

Carl Douglas was born to Carroll Douglas and Viola Thomas on June 11, 1935 in Onemo, Virginia. He graduated from Botetourt High School in Gloucester and was owner of M&G Transportation. For more than 40 years, Carl operated the company, employing and training numerous drivers, as well as hiring seasonal daffodil pickers and packers. Upon retiring, Carl returned to work for Revere Gas Company where he worked for 16 years, once again training new drivers and delivering propane to neighbors in Mathews and surrounding areas.

Carl loved and could tell a good story. He had an infectious sense of humor and a youthful spirit that could lighten any situation. He always had time for a joke and a good laugh. He loved spending time on the water and enjoyed breakfast with his friends in Gloucester and in Mathews most days of the week.

In earlier years, Carl spent time caring for horses and their riders. He was actively involved with the Gloucester Horse and Pony and the local 4-H clubs. He spent many Saturdays at horse shows where he enjoyed watching his daughters, his niece, and other young riders compete. He often referred to the years with the horses as some of the best of times.

While he will be greatly missed, the family is eternally grateful for his lifetime of loving care and devotion, the funny moments, and the tales that will be fondly remembered and shared often. The family would like to thank everyone who cared for Carl during his final days including family and friends, his nurses, and all the angels at Riverside Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to your favorite charity, or share breakfast and a good laugh with friends.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, Virginia.
