Caramel Pound Cake tops them all in May Faire contest

 
The recent first-time May Faire held in Mathews was a great success. The sponsoring organization, the Mathews County Historical Museum Committee, should receive a round of applause for their work to celebrate county history while providing a day of fun, laughter and good eating. From the maypole dance to the May queens to the vendors to songs from “Crickets on a Hill” to the town crier and to the pound cake contest, there was something for everyone on the Court Green.
Twenty-five bakers made 25 cakes for the pound cake competition. Three judges, after tasting and re-tasting, had to make the decision. They named Salted Caramel Pound Cake by Maria Saunders as number one. Maria is from Middlesex, but has strong family ties to Mathews.
