Capt. Willie Robert Callis (Bill) of Gwynn’s Island, Va., passed away Sept. 26, 2014.
Bill was born on Dec. 14, 1925, in Baltimore, Md., to the late Capt. Homer R. and Nancy D. Callis. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Kathryn H. Callis, and his brother, Homer V. Callis.
He is survived by his two daughters, Lisa Callis of Richmond, Va., and Mava Miles and her husband Steve Miles of New Kent, Va. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Wil and Madie Miles.
Bill joined the Merchant Marine at 17 and served his country at sea during WWII. His career spanned the years 1943-1983 and all waters from the Arctic to the Antarctic, primarily on the Bull Line. He was a member of the Marine Society of the City of New York, and a Mason for 50 years. In retirement, Bill enjoyed building model ships, relaxing on Gwynn’s Island and above all spending time with his grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Sept. 28 at Gwynn’s Island Cemetery at 3 p.m. The family received family and friends following the service at Bill’s home.
