Cantori Choral Ensemble to perform at Abingdon Church

The Cantori Choral Ensemble, on Sunday, May 4, at Abingdon Episcopal Church, Gloucester, will present one of two spring concerts, the Williamsburg-based group announced.
The Abingdon performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. on May 4. The other spring concert will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, at Walnut Hills Baptist Church, Williamsburg.
The theme for this spring’s concert is “Songs of the People.” Included on the program will be traditional spirituals such as “Deep River,” “Steal Away,” “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” and “Ain’t-a That Good News.”
Arrangers of the choral music include some of the foremost spiritual arrangers, including William Dawson, Jester Hairston, Moses Hogan, and the team of Robert Shaw and Alice Parker. Also on the program is an arrangement of “Amazing Grace” by Ēriks Ešenvalds. Most of the music will be sung a cappella, in keeping with the tradition of this music. A few pieces will be accompanied by pianist Rebecca Davy and violinist Mae-Li Beane.
