Over 20 people participated in the 27th annual Beaverdam Canoe Jam on Saturday at Gloucester’s Beaverdam Park.This year’s conditions were challenging with high humidity and temperatures. The stormy weather was hit or miss, although the participants had dry races all morning long. “Although it was tempting to take a swim, not a single craft flipped this year,” said race director Karla Havens.
Individual and paired canoe and kayak paddlers competed on scenic Beaverdam Reservoir in the Long Course (four miles) and the Short Course (two miles). Additionally, Canoe Jam organizers conducted a 4-Person Fun Sprint which requires four paddlers in one canoe.
Competitors and sponsors received T-shirts. Havens thanked all the participants, volunteers and sponsors, adding she hopes to see them support next year’s event. “Special thanks to the Beaverdam Park staff for all of their support prior to and during the event,” she added.
