Calvin Winston “Winnie” Barnes, 100, passed away holding his wife Gale’s hand on Sunday, June 30, 2024.
Born in Maryland, he was a resident of Hampton since the 1950s. Gale was a great wife and took good care of her husband.
Mr. Barnes was in World War II in the Navy on a destroyer when it was struck by a torpedo and sank. He swam to another destroyer and it was also struck by a torpedo and he swam to shore. Thank you for your service, Sir.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hampton. Winnie retired from Fort Monroe Fire Department.
His first wife of 65 years, Mary Barnes; daughters, Cathy Small and Cheryl Sayers, and grandson, Joey Williams, preceded him in death.
Mr. Barnes is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Gale Barnes; son, Lee Barnes (Joye); daughter, Donna Smith (Tom); grandchildren, Tracie, Michael, Adam, Chad, Karen and David; great-grandchildren, Thomas, Tabitha, Abby, Ava, Anabella, Gabriella, and Olivia; great-great-grandchild, Peyton.
A service will be held on Monday, July 8, 2024, at 1 p.m. at Parklawn Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Va. 23666.
