Calvin G. Morgan, 65, has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Mathews County School Board.
Morgan said if elected he plans to focus on a “back to basics” approach. He said many students in recent years have been struggling with math and reading, and more emphasis needs to be placed on those skills.
“Nationwide, students’ reading and math scores are at their lowest in decades,” he said. “I see that as a problem.”
The use of electronics such as computers and calculators are partly to blame, said Morgan, but so is the presence of cell phones in classes.
“We need to eliminate distractions to the greatest extent we can,” he said. “If they have that phone on them, they’re gonna use it, and a lot of times, not for appropriate purposes.”
Morgan said he is a strong advocate for having career and technical education programs such as carpentry, auto mechanics, engineering, and early childhood education in the schools. The board should invest in programs that give kids the best opportunities...
