Cabot “Hayes” Williams passed away on October 20, 2023, in Gloucester County, Va. He was born on September 21, 1933, at Hayes Store, Va., in the home of his parents, Preston Cabot Williams and Mae Thornton Williams. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Williams; his son, Roger Hayes Williams; his brother, William Lee Williams, and his sister, Camelia Williams Hogge. He is survived by his son, David Williams, his daughter-in-law Kim Williams, his granddaughter Blair Nein, her husband Johnny Nein; his granddaughter, Lindsey Williams; his great-grandson, John Robert Nein III, and several cousins.
Hayes graduated from Achilles High School in Gloucester County in 1950. He worked at Gloucester-Yorktown Ferry briefly and then for four years at NASA in Langley Field, Va. In 1956, he married his high school sweetheart. He went on to work for Amoco Oil Company at their Yorktown Refinery as a Process Operation Supervisor and then later wrote process procedure and training manuals. He retired in 1994 and then assisted his son, David, in establishing Rivercraft Marine, boat sales and service in Gloucester. Hayes made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ at 12 years old and was baptized at Providence Baptist Church on November 25, 1945. He enjoyed serving in various capacities in the Baptist churches for many years. These included Sunday school teaching, singing in the choir, Deacon, and working with his wife on mission projects. He enjoyed local history and family genealogy. He liked to garden and grow things like flowers, shrubs, trees, and vegetables. Travel was another favorite activity; he and Joyce took their two sons camping in all 48 consecutive U.S. states while they were young boys. Their family went boating and fishing locally as well. After his sons were adults, Joyce and Hayes traveled to all continents of the world. Bird-watching was a large part of their travels and time at home. They were members of bird clubs, native plant clubs, and conservation organizations; appreciation of God’s creation was a large part of their lives. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 30, 2023, from 10-10:45 a.m. at Gloucester Point Baptist Church. The funeral service conducted by Pastor Bill West will be at 11 o’clock, followed by interment at Rosewell Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
