The busy Route 3/14 westbound bridge at the boundary line between Gloucester and Mathews counties is due for a makeover, starting later this year.
Kelly Hannon, public information officer for the Virginia Department of Transportation, said the project, termed a rehabilitation of the westbound Burke Mill Stream bridge, was advertised this month. The estimated cost is $5.8 million.
The rehab work will replace the existing superstructure of the bridge and when complete, the bridge will have two 12-foot travel lanes and a three-foot-wide shoulder next to each travel lane, Hannon said.
This project will replace the bridge beams, the bridge deck, bridge rails, and travel surface. She said it is anticipated that construction will mobilize in the spring, with work to be completed about a year from now.
The existing bridge was built in 1948 and around 11,532 vehicles a day cross the westbound Route 3/14 bridge, Hannon said.
