It is with great sadness that the family of Breta Jenkins Hoover announce her sudden passing on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at the age of 65. She was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Joyce Jenkins. Breta was a lifelong resident of Gloucester Point and spent many childhood days with her siblings Bruce and Bonnie, having adventures at the Gloucester Point Yacht Haven and jumping off the neighbor’s dock into the York River. She graduated from Gloucester High School, married her soulmate and best friend, David, and together, they built a home focused on their love for family. Their love story was adored and admired by so many. She loved holidays, summers in her pool, any kind of “family” get-togethers, cooking, and baking; her pound cake is legendary! She loved hard and fiercely, filling her life and her daughters’ lives with joy and love. Beyond raising her children, Breta played a part in the lives of many other children for whom she babysat. She was their “Detta” and dearly loved by them all. Breta also had a talent for crochet, as evidenced by the many beautiful baby blankets she gifted to others. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bruce Jenkins. Breta will be forever loved by her husband of 44 years, David; her children, Katie Harris (Michael) and Aly Early (Michael); grandchildren, Grayson Harris and Andrew Early; sister, Bonnie Short (Gil), and nieces, Amanda Moran (Steve) and Bonny Paige Markwith (Scott); sister-in-law, Debbie and daughter Kelly, as well as numerous additional family members and lifelong friends. A Celebration of Life Service, officiated by Pastor Paul Song and Pastor Art Wolz, will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church, 1860 Hayes Road, Gloucester Point, Va. 23062. Additional services will be private. The family requests contributions be made to the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 9, Bena, Va. 23018. “Those we love don’t walk away; they walk beside us every day.”
Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.
