‘Books of Their Own’

The Kiwanis Club of Mathews, on behalf of the Mathews High School Key Club, recently applied for a grant from Hampton Roads Academy aimed at nonprofit organizations. The high school students at HRA are learning about how nonprofits operate and are offering grants up to $1,000 for nonprofit projects, said a press release. The MHS Key Club had started its own project to help younger students, titled “Books of Their Own.” The club will use the $500 provided in the awarded grant to continue next school year to provide each pre-school student in the Head Start classroom (located at MHS) a new book to take home each month. In a trial run, Key Club members (above) read to preschoolers and gave them books donated by Kiwanis members.
