Boating safety course to be offered twice in fall

A “Boat Virginia” classroom course will be taught by instructors with Coast Guard Auxiliary Mathews Flotilla 66 on two upcoming Saturdays, Sept. 23 and Oct. 21, at the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad building in Hudgins. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Boating Education Certificate, which is required for operators of personal watercraft and motorboats of 10 horsepower or greater, said a press release. The certificate is good for the lifetime of the boater.
Subjects that will be covered include “Before You Get Underway,” “Operating Your Boat Safely,” “The Legal Requirements of Boating,” and “Boating Emergencies—What to Do.”
The classes are sponsored by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and are conducted by the CG Auxiliary at no cost to participants, said the release.
