Fourteen students, some coming from as far away as Virginia Beach, Chester and Glen Allen, attended the Boat Virginia certificate class held Feb. 26 at the Cole Building training center in Deltaville. The class was taught by a team of instructors from Mathews Flotilla 66 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, including Tom Edwards, Mary McCoig, Mike Gregory and Mike Moore. Topics covered include, “Know Your Boat,” “Before You Get Underway,” “Operating Your Boat Safely,” “The Legal Requirements of Boating,” “Boating Emergencies” and “Enjoying Water Sports.” After completion of the class and after successfully passing a 60-question exam, a boating safety card was awarded to the students. All operators of boats powered by more than a 10-horsepower motor on Virginia waters are required to have this card in their possession.
