Members of the Mathews County School Board and Board of Supervisors sat down Saturday morning for a joint work session to consider the long-term capital needs for the school division, touching on such issues as whether the county should pursue a single combined campus for elementary, middle and high school students.
A wide variety of topics was discussed at the roughly four-and-a-half-hour meeting, which was held in the historic courthouse, looking at everything from the current pressing facility needs to whether Mathews might one day be able to expand its CTE (Career and Technical Education) offerings to attract students and funding from neighboring divisions.
In the end, the two boards agreed to proceed with developing a Request For Proposals (RFP) to conduct a space needs assessment, looking at the current condition of the three county schools and exploring options of either new school construction or renovating existing space.
