During the Mathews County Board of Supervisors’ April 18 meeting, county administrator Ramona Wilson and several supervisors touched on a variety of topics, from Smart Pole usage to the possibility of creating a new county park.
Smart Poles
Wilson said that one of the county’s Smart Poles is being repurposed for use at Haven Beach in order to provide security, including a camera and an emergency phone, as well as public Wi-Fi.
Eight Smart Poles were purchased by the county in 2020 to provide residents with internet access at different sites during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wilson suggested to the board that the remaining poles can be left where they are to continue providing service to residents, or the board can see if the churches and clubs where some of the poles are located want to take over payment. However, she said, if they do take over payments on the poles, “they don’t necessarily have to provide access.”
