Board stays with original Hole in the Wall alignment

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors held a brief, all-electronic November meeting on Tuesday, postponing employee recognitions and three public hearings until December. According to a memo, the decision to meet electronically was due to recent restrictions put in place by the governor’s office.

Lewie Lawrence, executive director of the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission, told board members that several challenges had arisen regarding dredging the Hole in the Wall channel, which connects Milford Haven and the Chesapeake Bay.
After conducting a grant-funded study on the project, Lawrence said, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science has determined that an alternative channel through the Pickle Patch would require agreements with several property owners who had indicated they would litigate to oppose it. VIMS has thus recommended dredging the existing channel instead.
