Blue Devils fall to Northumberland in regional semifinals

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team ended its 2025 season in heartbreaking fashion last Wednesday as they fell to the host Northumberland Indians in the VHSL Region 1A semifinals, 68-55.
Mathews started the game on a rampage, going on a 9-0 run to open up the first quarter. Junior Blake Hunley and senior Cam Matthews launched the game with back-to-back three pointers as the Blue Devil fan base took over the gym.
Fueled by the support of the Blue Devil fans, Mathews played strong defense, preventing the Indians from scoring a single point until the final minutes of the opening quarter. The second quarter was back and forth between both teams as Mathews kept its lead for a majority of the quarter.
