The Mathews High School varsity football team fell to 1-3 overall following a 21-7 loss on Friday night to Washington and Lee.
The Devils’ only score came in the third quarter, with Chris Davis capping off a Mathews drive with a 1-yard TD run. Kicker Ryan Morgan added the extra point.
Mathews had an opportunity to challenge the Eagles in the fourth quarter. Trailing 14-7, the Devils had the ball and were moving downfield, "but we didn’t make it happen," MHS head coach Paul White said.
This is the second week the Devils came up just short against a powerful foe; last week, Mathews lost to Franklin, 22-17. Getting a win over a playoff-bound team will be a big psychological edge for Mathews. "As soon as you beat a ranked team," White said, "all of a sudden, you get over the hump." The MHS coach said he expects W&L will probably play for the Region A, Division II championship again this year.
