Blue Devils fall in district semifinals

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team lost to Carver Academy in the district semifinals Friday night, 73-55.
Carver started the game off hot, making multiple three pointers in the first quarter. Mathews had no answer on defense, and struggled to score the ball. The host Wolverines jumped out to a 20-point lead to end the first quarter. Mathews turned the game around in the second quarter, preventing Carver from scoring from the three-point line.
Tae Legette scored on difficult layups and played strong defense. The Blue Devils managed to cut the score to 35-22 going into halftime. The third quarter started slow for both teams, until Tre Greene scored on a floater to give Mathews momentum. Mathews played strong defense to keep Car-ver within striking distance going into the final quarter.
The Blue Devils lessened the lead to nine points midway through the fourth quarter, but Carver suddenly found a spark, making three consecutive three-pointers and allowing no easy bucket...
