In a busy week for Blue Devil basketball, the Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team dropped contests to Essex, Carver Academy and Lancaster. The JV Devils, meanwhile, went 1-2 against those same opponents, including a thrilling 49-45 win over Essex.

Last Thursday, the MHS boys lost to Essex on the road, 77-58. Both teams played strong defense and minimized mistakes in the first quarter, resulting in a 16-16 tie. The second quarter began with a string of fast break points for Essex, but Mathews did not give up, holding Essex to an eight-point lead to end the half, 30-38. Mathews struggled tremendously in the third quarter, allowing 27 points while only scoring 10. Essex dominated with its rebounds and prevented Blue Devils scoring opportunities.
