The Mathews High School boys’ basketball season got off to a good start this week, as the varsity and JV squads traveled to Petersburg on Tuesday, coming home with wins over the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School Dragons.
Varsity
The varsity Blue Devils dominated the ARGS Dragons in coach Curtis Williamson’s return to Mathews with a 76-40 win. “First win, good win, but we have a lot of work to do,” Williamson said after the victory.
Mathews started slow with the game neck-and-neck with the Blue Devils having a nine-point lead to end the first quarter. Poor shooting haunted Mathews the entire first half, with the team going 2-12 from the three-point line. All of these misses allowed for senior Jordyn Cosby to pick up where he left off last season with 33 points and 20 rebounds. Mathews held on to the lead with a 30-25 advantage at the half. Appomattox was led by Kristopher Rhodes with 14 points.
