In an intense battle for first place in the Tidewater District varsity basketball standings, the Mathews High School Blue Devils edged the visiting Middlesex Chargers last Thursday night, 58-55.
The Blue Devils began the game with a hot start as Middlesex had no answer for the superior Mathews ball movement. The Blue Devils led the Chargers by eight points for most of the first quarter until Middlesex tightened the lead to only five, with Mathews leading, 16-11, after one quarter of play.
Mathews played unselfish basketball as the Blue Devils had eight assists in the first half. Tre Greene led Mathews in first-half scoring, contributing eight points to the Blue Devils’ 25. The second quarter featured extremely competitive basketball with Middlesex’s Nielson McMinn and Jaquan Griffin closing the lead to only three points to end the first half with Mathews edging Middlesex, 25-22.
