The Mathews High School cross country teams traveled to West Point last Wednesday, with both the boys and girls prevailing against fast opponents.
The Blue Devil boys scored 39 points to defeat Washington and Lee (41 points), Lancaster (76), Middlesex (111) and the host Pointers (127). The Lady Devils scored 31 points, beating out W&L (38), West Point (71), Lancaster (79) and Middlesex (forfeit).
In a close finish between the Mathews boys and Washington & Lee, Kyle Slaughter came in first for the Mathews harriers at 18:07 followed by Nick Brown (18:34), Elisha Kane (18:44), Justin Adams (18:52), Sam Jasinski (18:54), Tucker Blackwell (19:01) and Ricky Rutter (19:12). Jasinski and Blackwell showed resolve and provided excitement for the crowd as they both overtook opponents in the last 400 meters of the race to guarantee a win.
