The Mathews High School boys’ basketball team had a good night on Monday, as the varsity and JV teams had their final scrimmages before the regular season kicks off next week. The teams faced off against Surry, with the JV boys beating the visiting Cougars, 32-27, and the varsity Devils coming out on top, 71-62. Tae Legette, shown in photo at left going for a layup, led the varsity Blue Devils with 31 points. Tre Greene was hot from behind the 3-point line, going 4-for-6. And Jordyn Cosby controlled the boards with 19 rebounds. Seth James is shown taking it to the basket for the JV squad in photo at right. The MHS basketball program opens the regular season on Monday against Westmoreland (the boys at home, the girls away). On Tuesday, the boys will travel to Warhill while the girls will play them at home.
