Blue Devil baseball

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team beat the visiting Surry Cougars Tuesday by a 2-1 margin. All the scoring took place in the first inning, with Surry getting on the scoreboard first and Mathews coming back in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. Daniel Moughon pitched a complete game for the win, giving up only two hits and one unearned run. Last Thursday, the Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Middlesex before falling to the Chargers, 5-4. Dawson Adams took the loss. Above, MHS catcher Brady Wright takes a cut at the ball in Tuesday’s Surry game. Mathews has its final regular season home game at 5 p.m. Tuesday against King William. On Wednesday, June 9, the MHS boys travel to Northumberland. Post-season play begins Tuesday, June 15.
