The American Red Cross Mathews community blood drive, held on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Piankatank Ruritan Club building in Hudgins, resulted in the collection of 57 units, according to volunteer Nan Cross. A total of 61 potential donors showed up; seven were deferred, three were unable to give a sufficient quantity, and seven contributed double-red donations. Five donors—Robyn Beasley, Lydia Connelly, Sawyer Hutson, Nancy Lewis and Rachel MacBurney—gave for the first time in Mathews. Gallon pins were awarded to Jason Scribe (one gallon), Mary Lee Nugent (three gallons), Mike Koebach (eight gallons) and Jimmy Hall (nine gallons).
