Blood drive

The July 16 American Red Cross blood drive at the Piankatank Ruritan Club in Hudgins resulted in the collection of 58 units, according to volunteer Nan Cross. A total of 62 potential donors took part; eight were deferred and two were unable to give a sufficient quantity. Five provided double red donations. First-time donors in Mathews included Kathy Pereira (photo above), Patricia Cook, Faith Lewis, Robert Rains and Katarina Seda. Those receiving gallon pins included Sharon Dequaine (two gallons), Amy Hudgins (three gallons), Julie Jarvis (four gallons, photo below) and Cheryl Battle and Michael Cather (eight gallons). The next Mathews community blood drive will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
