St. James On-the-Glebe’s Blessing of the Fields took place on Rogation Sunday. The season of Rogationtide has been characterized by asking God’s blessing on the spring planting, as a reminder that human beings depend on the fruit of the earth. The congregation proceded into the field full of emerging corn, singing hymns of praise and entrusting all of their work and need to God’s hands. A cross was planted in the midst of the field to symbolize his presence in that need and that he too ate by the sweat of his brow. The fields were sprinkled with holy water to show their dedication to God. Everyone took a blessed cross home to plant in their own garden, field, or any other place to remind them of their reliance on God’s provision through the yield of the earth. Pictured are Fr. Kevin Fife in the foreground and Sr. Warden Rickey Wood during the ceremony.
