Black History Month concert on Feb. 2 at Cobbs Creek Arts Center

The Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, will be in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Cobbs Creek Arts Center.
The concert is sponsored by the Mathews Museum in recognition of February as Black History Month.The groups most recently performed in public at the Mathews Christmas Singalong and Concert held at Central United Methodist Church, and sponsored by Central Village Homemakers. The Men’s Chorus has been in existence for more than 25 years.
Also in concert will be Joshua Allen of Richmond, a classically trained vocalist, who will sing as well as play sacred and secular songs on his handmade instruments.
A release said he learned traditional hymns while trailing a plow and mule with his father and grandfather, on a North Carolina plantation. He will tell the story of his instruments, such as the African ox horn flute, made from animals used on farms. Allen is a former Marine and a former Mr. Virginia.
