Bill Sterling of Gloucester, took home the $2,000 first-place prize from Saturday’s fourth annual Mathews Rotary Club Rockfish Tournament, hauling in a 42.4-lb., 47-inch rockfish aboard his boat, "Total Kaos."
Twenty-seven boats entered the competition, which was hosted at Morningstar Marina. The weather cooperated and the fishing was bountiful, according to organizer David Fitch. Of the 27 boats, 11 brought back a total of 18 fish, including two citation-sized stripers.
Second place and $1,500 went to David Nova of White Stone, aboard "Marlin Maniac." He caught a 41.4-lb., 47½" striper, which was also good enough for a citation. The $1,000 third-place prize went to Sammy Fisher of Heathsville, who caught a 28.9-lb., 40½ rock.
