Joan Bevelaqua has been named February’s Artist of the Month in the Art Speaks Gallery at the Bay School Community Arts Center in Mathews.Bevelaqua said her drawings and paintings are based on her observations and perspective.
“I have always enjoyed looking carefully and challenging myself to create an illusion of the real,” she said in a press release. “I also employ images that explore the psychological and subconscious nature of reality.”
Bevelaqua’s artwork in watercolor and oil frequently involves paintings of vintage dresses.
“Not only is the cascading fabric beautiful to paint,” said the release, “but the dress itself is a metaphor for the life of the woman who actually wore that piece.”
The artist’s Green Dress series, of which two are on exhibit this month, was inspired by a vintage ball gown a friend gave Bevelaqua, said the release. It said she used at least six different colors of green to capture the luminous fabric.
