On what would have been her 100th birthday, fans of the late actress and animal advocate Betty White decided to pay homage to her life and legacy by donating to various animal shelters across the country this past Monday.
The viral social media event hit home when the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society joined the #BettyWhite-Challenge on its Facebook page. The shelter’s goal was to raise $2,000 for Monday’s challenge, but received over $9,000 in donations over the weekend and through Monday in White’s honor. A few donors even shared photos of their pets, many of who were adopted from GMHS.
“On behalf of all of the pets in need who look to Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society to be their voice and save their lives, I offer my sincerest thanks for each and every donation made to our organization in honor of Betty White, a lifelong animal welfare advocate and friend to all creatures great and small,” stated an email from the shelter. “We are thrilled to share $9,157 was raised in her honor.
