Organist and pianist Rudy Shackelford will present “1918—A Homage to Claude Debussy,” a concert of French music composed before and during World War I, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18 at Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point.
The concert is being held in honor of the centennial of the conclusion of World War I. The “War to End All Wars” ended with the Armistice on Nov. 11, 1918, now commemorated at Veterans Day.
In its cultural impact, World War I was a profound watershed, dividing the 19th century Romantic era from the modern world, a release stated. Debussy, who died in 1918, bridged these turbulent currents and reflected them in music that is both subtly elusive and powerfully prophetic, according to the release from Bethany UMC.
