Benjamin “Benny” Steven Gill, 80, of Hayes, passed away at his home in Gloucester on Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Born April 28, 1934 in Roanoke, he was the son of the late Bannister R. Gill Sr. and Judy St. Clair Gill. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bannister R. Gill Jr.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Rose Newell Gill.
Benny was raised in Richmond and was a proud 1953 graduate of John Marshall High School, where he co-captained the football team, and made many enduring friendships. He attended the University of Virginia and later served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Fort Snelling LSD 30. Following his naval service he took a position with the Petersburg Insurance Company and spent 30 years with the company he later owned. During this time he served on the National Producers Advisory Council of the Commercial Union Insurance Company. Active in the business community, he served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia First Savings and Loan Association and BB&T’s Virginia Board. After leaving the insurance business he moved to Richmond where he started Benny’s BBQ, his proudest accomplishment.
In retirement, he enjoyed boating, golfing and reading WWII history.
A special thanks is extended to longtime friends Allen Barbee and Rives Bailey for their devotion during his illness.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
In memory of Benny, contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. G. Edward Mowry, 7274 Joseph Lewis Road, Hayes, Va. 23072.
