Benjamin George Catlett of Hayes, passed away on Monday, August 5, 2024, at the age of 74. Benjamin was the son of John R. and Flossie Diggs Catlett. He was educated in Gloucester County Public Schools. After graduating from Gloucester High School, Benny enlisted in the United States Army and served until he was honorably discharged in 1971. In March of 1972, he began working for Northrop Grumman Newport News. He remained employed at the Shipyard for 38 years, retiring in May of 2010.
When he wasn’t working, Benny loved to hunt and fish. He was a devoted member of the Tri-County Hunt Club in King and Queen County, taking vacation from work every year from Thanksgiving through New Year’s in order to spend as much time in the woods as possible. He took great pride in leaving home at 4 a.m. so that he could be at the clubhouse in time to get the coffee started before the rest of the guys showed up.
Benny was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Gwendolyn Benvie, and his wife of 45 years, Blois Lawrence Catlett. He leaves to cherish his memory three sisters, LaVerne Forrest, Patricia Catlett, and Karen Garrett; one sister-in-law, Yvonne Young (Vurnis); one nephew, Troy Garrett; five nieces, Sheila Henley (Daryl), Sheryl Allen, Stefen Forrest, VaKara Forrest, and Albany Garrett; three great-nieces, Jaidyn Forrest, Joelle Forrest, and Jouri Garrett; one great-nephew, Benjamin Forrest, and a lifelong friend, John Green.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 13 at First Baptist Church, Ordinary. An interment was held at Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery on Wednesday, August 14 at 10 a.m.
