Bellamy United Methodist Church in Gloucester will host a Four Chaplains Service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2. The church is located at 4870 Chestnut Fork Road.
The service marks the 76th anniversary of the heroic actions of the four chaplains on the USAT Dorchester, which was sunk in the North Atlantic by German U-boat U-223 on Feb. 3, 1943. Of the 902 men aboard, 672 died and the chaplains sacrificed their lives so that others could live.
Guest speaker for the service will be Chaplain (LTC) Douglas C. Swift from Joint Base Langley-Eustis. A luncheon will follow the service and is open to the public. To attend the luncheon, an RSVP is requested to legionpost75@outlook.com by Jan. 18.
The service is sponsored by American Legion Post 75 in Gloucester, American Legion Post 83 in Mathews, the DAV Chapter 58 and the VFW Post 8252, both in Gloucester, and the Marine Corps League, Middle Peninsula Detachment 1317.
