Bayside Youth Ballet will present its spring gala “Celebrating the Classics and the Contemporary” at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, in the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School.
Dancers from Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex and West Point will be performing excerpts from the classical ballet “Coppelia” by Leo Delibes. It is one of the most popular ballets of the 19th century, said a press release. Set in a European village, the ballet includes a lively Mazurka and a lighthearted section exploring friendship. Guest dancers will join in the performance.
As a tribute to Broadway, the dancers will present “Shoeless Joe” from “Damn Yankees,” “Manson Trio” from “Pippin,” and the popular “Prince Ali” from “Aladdin.” Company dancers recently attended a performance of “Aladdin” on Broadway in New York and participated in a master class with Disney choreographers, said the release.
