The spring of 1966 brought the usual appearance of new things in Mathews County, including two rock bands formed by Mathews High School students. They faced off in June for a Battle of the Bands at the Mathews Spring Festival, and are shown in this illustration from the festival program. The Levis, left, came in first. Members, from left, were Andy Camp, Neal Abrahamson, Billy Walker, Ricky Hudgins and Ross Lewis. The Centries, right, included, from left, Jimmy Curfman, Ed Oliver, Curt Bazemore, William Nelson Haywood and Teddy Earl Lewis. The Centries tied for second with a Gloucester band, The Mad Hatters.
