Battle of Hook memorial to be dedicated Oct. 18

A memorial to the French soldiers who fought and died for American independence at the 1781 Battle of the Hook will be dedicated on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 18 at Abingdon Elementary School.
The American Society of Le Souvenir Francais, Inc., is dedicating the memorial at the ceremony, which will be held at 1:30 to 2 p.m.
Last October, the same organization unveiled a pair of interpretive markers to commemorate the battle at Abingdon Park, near Abingdon Elementary.
The Oct. 3, 1781 battle in Gloucester County saw Duc de Lauzun’s Legion and Lt. Col. John Mercer’s Select Battalion of Grenadiers defeat Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton’s British Legion and a detachment of Royal Welch Fusiliers, in what proved to be the largest cavalry battle of the American Revolution.
