BARBARA JEAN MARTIN LEMON

Barbara Jean Martin Lemon, entered eternal peace on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, surrounded by her loving family at the home of her daughter, in Rhome, Texas. She was the daughter of the late Mertie Marshall and Woodrow Martin, born on June 18, 1936, in Jamacia, Queens, New York. Barbara and Willie Lemon wedded on Nov. 19, 1955, and she gave birth to three loving children: Stephanie, Jeffrey, and Derrick. In 1988, Barbara and Willie took a chance and moved to Gloucester, Virginia, from Brooklyn, New York. Those were different times, and work in Virginia was a bit scarce and more challenging to come by. During their transition, Barbara kept her professional career as a C.N.A. before retiring in Gloucester County. During her retirement, Barbara continued to be active by constantly traveling with her partner, cooking large meals for her family, shopping with her daughter, and holding long conversations with her sons. Even though she moved to the South, Barbara never gave up her New York ways. You will always know a New Yorker when you meet one because of how they introduce themselves. She was a quick-witted woman that kept a sharp look in her back pocket and with her husband on her team they were a force to be reckoned with. Not even death could dull her New York fashion sense; she collected and maintained a wardrobe most women would die for.

If you knew Barbara then you knew she was an avid reader, always toting a book around no matter where she was. She loved music listening for hours on end on her Bose system as it cranked the sounds of different music, her favorite being jazz. When she was busy, you could hear her humming tunes around the house. Above all Barbara loved and cherished her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lemon; two brothers, Michael and Sonny, as well as her two sisters, Florence and Linda. She leaves behind a daughter, Stephanie Talley (Mark); two sons, Jeffrey Lemon (Teresa), and Derrick Lemon (Dawn); seven grandchildren, Briana (Noah), Taylor, Jerrell (Tiffany), Isaiah (Renee), Terence, Troy (Stephanie), Antoine (Bridget); 10 great-grandchildren, Oliver, Jordyn, Derrick, Shia, Cash, Jeremiah, Seven, Aten, Talayah, Taylen, and numerous nieces, nephews and faithful friends. The family received friends on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022, at Hogg Funeral Home from 10-11 a.m. with a chapel service to begin at 11 o’clock. Following the service entombment took place in Windsor Gardens Cemetery and Mausoleum, 80 Soles Lane, Dutton, Virginia 23050.
