It’s quite an accomplishment for a Tidewater District school to have one of its students named Athlete of the Year. This year, for the first time, Mathews High School has both the male and female senior Athletes of the Year—Kaitlin Eriksen, seated at left, and James Pavik Jr., seated, right. Eriksen was a first-team all-district selection in basketball and is a standout performer on the Lady Devils’ softball team. Pavik earned all-district and all-region honors as a linebacker and running back on the football team, was a state champion wrestler and most recently a member of the MHS track team. Eriksen and Pavik will each receive a $500 honorarium. Pavik will be attending the University of Richmond in the fall, while Eriksen will be going to Coastal Carolina University.
