We ran a photograph of a soft drink bottle with the imprint of Morris Curfman’s Mathews Bottling Works on June 11. This week, Richard Miles sent these photos of a bottle from Merritt Moore Bottlers at Hudgins. Our records indicate that Moore, who moved to Mathews County from Poquoson early in the 20th century, bottled cola, orange, grape and ginger ale at his shop in Hudgins. The late Cecil Sibley, proprietor of Sibley’s Store in Mathews (now the Visitors Center), recalled in 1982 that Mr. Moore was very hard of hearing, and that he very slowly drove a yellow delivery truck which other vehicles would get stuck behind for a long way. His nickname was Pop.
