Ann Matvey of North, Va., aged 100 years 11 months, passed away on March 3, 2014.
Ann was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on March 23, 1913, of Elizabeth Vajda and John Andzelik. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Matvey, who died on July 3, 1981, and by brothers, Joseph, John, Steven, Edward and William, and sisters, Mary, Julia, Helen and Elizabeth.
Ann grew up in Pittsburgh and married John Matvey, a Duquesne University graduate. They moved to Washington, D.C., in 1942, where John worked for the War Department. She was active in the affairs of her church, Assumption Catholic, and her children’s schools, St. Mary’s and Notre Dame Academy. After her husband’s death, Ann lived in Rockville, Md., for 20 years, enjoying her activities with local women’s and bowling clubs and non-stop baking of cookies, cakes and pies and her famous Slovak nut bread for family and friends.
She is survived by one sister, Catherine; two daughters, Mynette Matvey of North, Va., and Evelyn Dunn and husband Lawrence of Olney, Md.; also grandchildren, Michael Dunn and wife Mary, William Dunn and wife Gazala, James Dunn, Lauretta Kerr and husband Robert and Jeannine Kujawa and husband Nick; plus great-grandchildren, Henry and Jack Dunn and Elena Kerr and grand-nieces, Suzy Brocolli, Beth Surena, Gayle Shriver, and nephew, Henry Blanker.
Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home of Mathews, is in charge of cremation arrangements.
Her ashes will be buried at her husband’s gravesite in Olney, Md., following a Catholic service.
